Automobile accidents happen fast – often a few seconds is all it takes to completely alter the course of someone’s life.
According to the World Health Organization, nearly 1.25 million people die in road crashes each year for an average 3,287 deaths per day – and an additional 20 to 50 million people are injured or disabled in these unfortunate events. The high global rate of fatalities and disabilities related to car accidents has been called an epidemic and even identified as a major public health concern.
If an accident involves one or more trucks instead of cars, it is even more likely to result in death or injury. This is largely due to the sheer size of the vehicles – while most cars weigh about 2.5 tons, the average semi or tractor-trailer can weigh 40 tons. This means these large vehicles take longer to come to a complete stop than the average motor vehicle.
Given this information, it is probably unsurprising that in most truck accidents, speed is a significant factor – as well as the carelessness or recklessness of the truck drivers themselves, who may have been following too closely, falling asleep at the wheel, or otherwise impaired. Truck drivers may be partially responsible for as many as 55 percent of road crashes involving trucks. According to a survey by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the following items also contribute to accidents:
- 27 percent of trucks had brake problems
- 19 percent of drivers were unfamiliar with the route
- 7 percent of drivers were overly tired
- 3 percent of trucks had tire problems
- 0.4 percent of drivers were under the influence of illegal substances
- 0.3 percent of drivers had been consuming alcohol
